What is Driving License?

A Driving License (DL) is an official document issued by the RTO that authorizes a person to operate motor vehicles. It comes in categories: LMV (car/jeep), MCWG (motorcycle), HGMV (heavy vehicles), and more.

Who Can Apply

  • Age 18+ for motor vehicles (LMV/motorcycle)
  • Age 16+ for gearless motorcycles below 50cc
  • Must hold a valid Learner's License for 30 days before applying for DL

Documents Required

  • Valid Learner's License (30+ days old)
  • Proof of Age (Aadhaar / Passport / Birth Certificate)
  • Proof of Address (Aadhaar / Utility Bill)
  • Medical Certificate (Form 1A) for commercial vehicles
  • 3 passport-size photographs

Apply for Learner's License

Visit sarathi.parivahan.gov.in > Apply for Learner's License. Take online theory test.

Wait 30 Days

Hold the Learner's License for at least 30 days before applying for DL.

Apply for Driving License

Apply online at sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and book a driving test slot at your RTO.

Appear for Driving Test

Visit the RTO on the scheduled date with your vehicle for the practical driving test.

Receive DL

DL is dispatched to your address within 7 days of passing the test, or collect from RTO.

  • Carry all original documents to the RTO on test day
  • Renew DL at least 30 days before expiry to avoid penalties
