Goods & Services Tax — Register, File Returns & Claim ITC
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on supply of goods and services across India. It replaced multiple taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty. It has 4 slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, 28%.
Go to gst.gov.in > Services > Registration > New Registration. Fill Part A with PAN and mobile.
Fill Part B with business details, address, bank account, and upload documents.
Application verified by GST officer. May seek clarification within 7 working days.
GSTIN (15-digit number) issued within 3 working days of complete application.
File GSTR-1 (outward supplies), GSTR-3B (summary return) monthly or quarterly.
Not mandatory if turnover is below ₹20 lakh (goods) or ₹10 lakh (NE/hill states). But voluntary registration is beneficial to claim ITC.
ITC allows you to reduce your tax liability by the GST you paid on purchases. Only available to registered GST taxpayers.
Under QRMP scheme: 2 quarterly returns + annual return. Under monthly: 12 GSTR-1 + 12 GSTR-3B + 1 annual GSTR-9.
Small businesses with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore can pay flat 1–5% GST without detailed accounting under the composition scheme.
GST registration is free. Penalties for late filing: ₹50/day (CGST + SGST), ₹20/day for nil returns.
